Before you launch your podcast, you must choose the right host. Anchor and SoundCloud are among the best podcast hosts on the market, but which one is the best for you? Also, is there a third option available?
Anchor: a free yet limited option
Anchor is still the biggest host in the world today 🥇, but mainly because it is free-of-charge. It was bought up by Spotify in 2019 and has become most beginners’ favorite. We think it is interesting for those whose podcast is not a priority, for instance YouTubers looking for a new way to share their audio contents, or people who want to upload the highlights of a Zoom meeting.
For such users, Anchor is great. Not only is it free, but it is also user-friendly. It features IAB-certified stats and provides you with a webpage. However, if you are ambitious and aim for more, Anchor might not meet your expectations; there aren’t many features, the interface is quite basic, the stats are limited, and Anchor ads will feature on your podcast website.
SoundCloud: a platform for musicians, not podcasters
When you are a beginner and don’t know anything about podcast hosting, SoundCloud is the first name that pops in your mind. You can’t fight it! SoundCloud has built a strong reputation among musicians 🎸 and people in general.
The problem is that SoundCloud was made for musicians, not for podcasters. There aren’t many podcast features; the interface is just not made for podcasts and there aren’t any updates to fix that. Let’s get straight to the point: no podcaster should use SoundCloud ⛔. Any other platform is better.
Also, don’t think that using a famous platform like SoundCloud will help you reach a wider audience. Most people don’t use SoundCloud for podcasts. They prefer real podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Spotify. To sum things up, there are no pros and quite a lot of cons!
