  • How to promote a podcast : social media tips and tricks

    Podcastics • Community

    Podcasting is like a relationship: you have to keep the flame alive over time. The bond you share with your listeners is not only about posting episodes on a regular basis. Over the week(s) leading to your next episode, there are various social medias you can use to keep in touch with your audience and even try to reach new fans. Twitter and Instagram are obviously on top.

    Social media is one of the main keys to your future success. Podcast fans are young and into new technologies. Most of your listeners use Twitter, that’s for sure, so use it too! You must promote your next episode through your social pages, all the more so as most hosts feature an automatic integration of the video player.

    Do not forget Facebook and Instagram, as they also help you stay in touch with your audience and create a real community. How so? Well, technically, promoting audio content through writing, even if it is just short stuff, is a real challenge, especially since managing a podcast is already time-consuming and energy guzzling. Some podcasters may have enough fuel left in the tank  to chase retweets, but most of them will just keep it to a minimum. So, just like always, you will have to adapt your ambitions to your possibilities and vice versa. This said, here are a few tips that may be useful to all podcasters:

    • React to the news and link them to the content of your shows;
    • Tease for your next episode, ideally the day before, and share it several times over the next few days;
    • Open the doors to your backstage and show a couple of sneak peeks of your recording sessions;
    • Interact through “private jokes” linked to past episodes (don’t force yourself, it will come naturally);
    • Exchange actively, either by answering questions or asking your audience to share their ideas and advice so you can improve your podcast…

    If you use Twitter – which you should do, just like most podcasters – follow as many accounts related to your topic/specialty/job as possible. By doing so, you will see that reciprocity rules here: people will follow you back, you will form a strong base of followers and your teasers will then reach a wider audience.

    Spark off social engagement!

    Now that your purposes are set, let’s see how you can complete them. Today, 90% of podcasts hit 90% of their final engagement within the four days after they are released, so it is crucial to quickly reach as many people as possible. To do so, here are things you can leverage:

    • Hashtags: on both Twitter and Instagram, choosing the right hashtags may help you reach the right people. The number of characters is limited so choose wisely. Avoid long messages and use as many relevant hashtags as possible in your posts;
    • Guests: the best way to reach new people is to invite someone famous, potentially another podcaster, as long as you properly promote this collaboration on social media over the days following the release of your episode;
    • Images: whatever your favorite social media is, images always speak louder than text. Websites like Quozio, among many others, are great to turn a quote taken from your latest episode into a beautiful picture, so dare to be creative;
    • Videos: they are even more striking than images! Once again, there are many online tools – like Headliner – to make short video clips out of a picture and an audio sample. Such clips are great to arouse interest in your podcast and make random net surfers want to listen to your latest episode.
