Here we have the “pont de pierre”, the first bridge built in Bordeaux, and for over 140 years it was the only bridge linking the left and right riverbanks. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered its construction in the early 19th century to facilitate his army’s journey to Spain.
The bridge itself is hollow, to prevent it from sinking into the muddy riverbed due to its own weight, and each column sits on over 200 sunken wooden poles. To help the bridge in its battle against the elements, it became pedestrian in 2018.
