03 - Chaban-Delmas bridge

Play
0 min / Published

This is the Jacques Chaban-Delmas bridge, a lift bridge bearing the name of a former resistance fighter, prime minister and mayor of Bordeaux for 48 years, a national record!

This work of art is a real technical achievement: the central span is linked to counterweights found in the pillars, and can be raised up to 53m high in roughly 10 minutes, allowing passage to cruise ships and large sailboats.

The architect Thomas Lavigne had to respect UNESCO’s wishes and reduce the height of the pillars so they would not be visible from the “Place de la Bourse”.
