04 - Bordeaux’s cultural influence

Play
0 min / Published

Land of wine and trade, Bordeaux was also a cultural hub thanks to famous writers, such as Montaigne, Montesquieu and Mauriac. Nicknamed “the 3 Ms”, these authors left their mark on the city as well as on French literature.

But French culture would be nothing without its Cuisine! It’s no surprise that a dish “à la Bordelaise” is prepared with red wine! One of Bordeaux’s delicacies is a small pastry called the “canelé”. Legend tells us local nuns made these for the poor after sweeping the flour and sugar off the city’s docks once the ships unloaded, and collecting egg yolks from local wine-makers, who used the egg whites to filter their wine.
