The Phantom of the Opera is a 2004 musical directed by Joel Schumacher, written by Schumacher and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and starring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, and Minnie Driver. It's based on the Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn was based on Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux.
