Episode 10: The Angel who sang Gloria!

"And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" Luke:2-14

Gloria! Gloria, Gloria! Stop and listen with me! Can you hear it? It is the sound of Heaven coming down to earth! You may have enjoyed the song of the angel chorus, but listen! It is a song, no... a sound more glorious than any you have ever heard or that even we angels could ever sing.

Gloria, Gloria! It’s a song of praise to God! Join us in praising God because tonight, in the dark of this night, he has leapt from his throne on High to dwell among you! Gloria! Gloria!

He loves you so much that he has come down to live among you. He loves you so much that he wants to be close to you, in the flesh, so that you can see him, hear him, and touch him.

Gloria, Gloria!

He is God and His name is Jesus! Come with me! O won't you come? Come! Let us adore Him!

During these special days of Advent, get your heart ready now by praising and thanking God for his great love. The more we praise him now, the more we will be ready to sing Gloria! on Christmas day.

Lord Jesus, you are the King of Glory! Help me to know you and love you as the only one who can bestow true peace, the only one who can bestow true joy, the only one who can show me how to love. Help me to praise you today for your great love! Amen.

Prayer Starters for Parents

Fear. Amazement. Disbelief. Shock. Disinterest. These are just some of the reactions to Jesus' birth that we read about in the Gospels. But the angels who appeared over the fields during the night watch teach us the best response to what God has done: Praise!  "Join us in praising God because tonight, in the dark of this night, he has leapt from his throne on High to dwell among you! Gloria! Gloria!"

Teaching our kids to praise God for the wonders of his love is one of the most important things we can do. When we praise God we take the focus off of ourselves and put it on God. Praise causes us to think about how good the Lord is to us and the wonders he has done for us. Praise lets us deliberately stop and remember how amazing the Lord is. In a world that is very self-focused and selfie-oriented, praise offers a healthy corrective to look more at God than at ourselves.

For prayer today, here's a beautiful Psalm of praise you can pray with your kids:

Psalm 148
Praise the Lord from the heavens.
Praise him high above the earth.
Praise him, all you angels.
Praise him, all you armies of heaven.
Praise him, sun and moon.
Praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens
and you waters above the sky.
Let them praise the Lord
because they were created by his command.
He set them in place forever and ever.
He made a law that will never end.

Praise the Lord from the earth.
Praise him, you large sea animals and all the oceans.
Praise him, lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
and stormy winds that obey him.
Praise him, mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedar trees.
Praise him, you wild animals and all cattle,
    small crawling animals and birds.
Praise him, you kings of the earth and all nations,
princes and all rulers of the earth.
Praise him, you young men and women,
    old people and children.

Praise the Lord.
    He alone is great.
He is greater than heaven and earth.
God has given his people a king.
He should be praised by all who belong to him.
He should be praised by the Israelites, the people closest to his heart.

Praise the Lord!
