Bless The Lord

Ps. 103

Has the Lord been good to you? He loves to bless those who love Him and His blessings are amazingly diverse and abundant. He know just what we need and a life with Him is filled with divine blessings.

Still, did you know that we should not only welcome and embrace His blessings, we should bless the Lord. David, in Psalm 103 is clear. He encourages himself to “Bless the Lord oh my soul and forget not one of His benefits.” We read those words and are eager to move to the next verse, but have you ever paused and consideered what these words mean? How do we bless the Lord. What do you give someone Who has everything?

The word to bless here, means “to kneel down in adoration.” It is the closest physical expression of worship to a military salute. Usually, a soldier of lower rank will respond to a higher ranking officer by coming to attention and saluting the officer. The officer, in return, will echo the salute. It is an act of recognision, submission and respect. To bless the Lord, we recognize that He is our Lord, our Commander in Chief, our King. He is our authority and we bless Him by bowing before Him, kneeling in worship and adoration while submitting to His will and purposes for our lives.

We must be in the blessing business. We should take time every day and bless the Lord with all that is within us, But we should not stop there.

Jesus instructs us in Matt. 5 to “Bless those that curse you.” What does that mean? And how do we possibly do that? The word Jesus uses here means “to speak good, to consecrate simething to the Lord.” Wow! When we bless someone we consecrate them to the Lord. They might wish you to hell, but in return we should place them into the hands of the Lord. That is the best blessing you can give anyone. The Lord has 24/7 access to them. He can speak to them throughout the day and visit them in their dreams. He can send countless Christians, messengers of the gospel to them to teach them His ways. What should we do when someone curses us? Bless them. In doing that, you recognize that the blessings of God are greater than the curses of man. That your life is determined by what God says over you and not by the flawed and evil declarations of man.

Prov. 14:3 says, “In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, but the lips of the wise will preserve them.” May our words have preservation power and not rooted in rotting pride.

When we bless those who curse us, we are speaking prophetically over their lives. we call the things that are not as if they are. We speak to the unrealised potential in their lives and not the present predicaments they are entangled in. Let us build up with our words and not break down. We do not condone bad behavior or turn a blind eye to insults, but we choose to bless and not curse. To speak life and not death. To consecrate people to God and send them into the hands and snares of the evil one.
