Peace at Christmas: Introduction
As we celebrate the joyous season of Christmas, it is important to reflect on the true meaning of this special time. In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to get caught up in the materialistic aspects and lose sight of the message of peace that Christmas brings. In Luke 2:16-20, we find a powerful lesson about finding peace with God, ourselves, and others by embracing an attitude of humility.
Peace at Christmas: The Gift of Humility
The shepherds, who were considered lowly and insignificant in society, were chosen by God to be the first witnesses of Jesus' birth. They were entrusted with the news of the Saviour's arrival, and their humble hearts were filled with awe and wonder. Despite their lowly status, they recognised the magnitude of the moment and responded with faith and obedience.
Similarly, Mary, a young and humble girl, was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. She willingly accepted God's plan for her life, despite the challenges and uncertainties that lay ahead. Her humble submission to God's will allowed her to experience the profound peace that comes from surrendering to his purpose.
Peace at Christmas: Finding Peace through Humility
The angels' message to the shepherds was clear: "Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased." (Luke 2:14). This peace that the angels proclaimed is not merely the absence of conflict, but a deep and abiding sense of well-being that comes from being in right relationship with God, ourselves, and others.
To find this true and lasting peace, we must follow the example of Mary and the shepherds by embracing humility. Humility allows us to acknowledge that all we are and all we have comes from God. It is an attitude of surrender, recognising that we are not in control and that our ultimate peace and fulfilment can only be found in him.
When we let go of our pride and self-sufficiency, we open ourselves up to receive God's grace and guidance. We become vessels through which his peace can flow, transforming our relationships and bringing harmony to our lives.
Reflection Question
How can we cultivate an attitude of humility in our own lives this Christmas season? How can embracing humility bring us closer to experiencing the true peace that Christmas offers?
