God Has Given You the Ability to Stop
Today's Battle Drill Devotional: God Has Given You the Ability to Stop
Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. (Exodus 20:8)
We are each made in God’s image. That means that like him, we can stop. If we do not have a regular pattern of work and rest, then we have stopped imitating God. This week we consider what it means if we truly observe God’s command to Sabbath each week.
Read Exodus 20:1-20. Many of us live lives that are full and overflowing. We are overscheduled, stressed, preoccupied, and exhausted. We do not have enough hours in the day. We know God longs for us to find rest. We know we should slow down. We know we need to rest and recharge our batteries. But we can’t stop. If we aren’t busy, we feel guilty. How can we ever get off this merry-go-round?
God offers us a way out. It is ground-breaking. It goes totally against all that the modern world teaches us. But it is a powerful weapon to help us reset our entire lives towards God. It’s Sabbath. It comes from the Hebrew word that means “to cease, to stop working” and it is commanded by God.
Every week, God gifts us the command to stop working and rest for one 24-hour period. Choosing to do so is both radical and extremely difficult. It forces us to look at our spiritual maturity, the core of what we believe about the way the world works, the core of our faith and the priorities of our lifestyles.
But it is essential if we want understand God and his role in our lives, and if we want to find our true selves in the modern-day blizzard of activity, stress, and exhaustion.
It’s an incredible invitation. Are you ready to embrace it?
THINK IT OVER
Think about the following:
How often do you catch yourself multitasking? Do you think its effective?
