Interview: Author Dan Levitt Talks MLB Innovation and Cheating on The Final Judgement with Tony Cutillo

15 min / Published

Baseball has been surrounded by controversy over the years and with the introduction of technology, it never seems to go away. MLB has introduced a number of processes to battle against cheating, but will it ever be enough? I talk to the Baseball Expert and Author of "International Balk, Baseball's Thin Line Between Innovation and Cheating" Dan Levitt to break it all down! Here’s what we discussed…….

First off, you have been the author of many fantastic books, but this one really hits home for me. That being said, tell me how this book came to be. In Chapter 1 (Deception) it says, “Many of the examples are clearly rule-breaking, though there is a consensus within the game that they are acceptable, even honorable. But, inevitably, not everyone agrees.” Why is that?

Coming into this season, nobody thought #aaronjudge and #albertpujols would be chasing history, but they are. They are doing it in the so-called clean era of baseball, but will there always be a question? Cheating in Baseball has been around since the inception of the game. Even with the strict regulations, will it still exist quietly?

In Chapter 5 “Penny Nails and Cork” you bring to light the 1998 Home Run chase, at a time when MLB was dead. Steroids brought it back and Bud Selig turned a blind eye towards it, but still ends up in Cooperstown. How is that possible?

I say, Barry Bonds, you say……… I say Houston Astros, you say……….

The last question is, as technology continues to rise in the world and become more meticulous, will MLB be able to stay ahead of the curve and keep it from tarnishing the game? ***Dan Levitt is the Author of “Intentional Balk: Baseball’s Thin Line Between Innovation and Cheating.” Moreover, he is an MLB Network TV commentator, frequent sports radio guest, recipient of the Society for American Baseball Research 2015 Bob Davids Award, and a diehard fan of the game!
