Why is it still so hard for men in music to ask for help?

Lloyd Luther and Bemz open up about the silence, the pressure, and the systemic barriers that stop men from expressing how they actually feel - and why compassion, not condemnation, is the only way forward.

🎙 MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH

Hosted by Be Charlotte, this is the fifth episode in a six-part series exploring mental health, safety, and systemic challenges in the music industry - with a particular focus on supporting young people entering the industry.

Lloyd Luther is an artist whose music has been featured on Netflix's Top Boy, a MOBO Award finalist, and a mental health advocate. Bemz is an artist and founder of M4 Festival, which he created after realising he needed to build opportunities rather than wait for them.

In this episode we cover:

- The silence and pressure men face when asking for help with their mental health

- The impact of toxic masculinity discourse and incel culture on vulnerable young men

- Why compassion is essential rather than condemnation

- The intersectionality of being a Black man in an industry that boxes artists into limited roles

- Living with Crohn's disease while pursuing a music career

- Founding M4 Festival and the mental exhaustion of being at the forefront of representation

- Why young men still face systemic barriers that prevent authentic self-expression

⚠️ Trigger warning: This episode contains discussions of men's mental health including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It also contains references to drug use from a young age, chronic illness, toxic masculinity, misogyny in music, online radicalisation, racism, and systematic discrimination in the music industry. It also covers the specific trauma of marginalisation and industry exploitation. The views expressed are those of the guests and host and are intended for informational purposes only. They do not constitute professional mental health, legal, or financial advice.
