Mr Bingley's sister advises Jane that they are staying in London for the foreseeable future effectively warning her off her brother. This follows the rejection by Lizzie of her cousins marriage proposal. Their cousin then turns to their neighbour Charlotte Lucas whom they thought of as a friend and she agrees to his marriage proposal. This means that upon Mr Bennett's death that she will become the lady of the house.

Mrs Bennett is not amused!

Mrs Bennett is beside herself, firstly Lizzie refuses Mr Collins advances even though it would mean that she would become the lady of the house in the event of her fathers death. She is further dismayed to learn that their neighbour Charlotte has instead agreed to Mr Collins marriage proposal.
