Following Lydia's disappearance with Mr Wickham the Bennett's family reputation is tarnished

Lydia and Mr Wickham are found. Mr Gardiner writes to the Bennetts advising that they will marry once Mr Wickhams debts have been paid which Mr Gardiner agrees to do, he does not confide as to what the relative amounts and Mr. Bennet strongly suspects that Mr. Gardiner has already paid more than he can afford.

Mr Bennett  can offer a dowry of £1000 and £100 PA. He knows Wickham would be a fool to take less for Lydia, but he agrees and Mrs Bennett begins to plan for the wedding.

Despite the damage to their family reputation caused by Lydia's elopement the Bennet's all agree that Lydia and Wickham must marry, but Jane and Elizabeth wonder how they can ever repay Mr. Gardiner.
