Despite the warnings against buying the Canterville Chase, Mr. Hiram B. Otis purchases the old house. Lord Canterville, the previous owner, tells Mr. Otis that the ghost has lived in the house since 1584, and when Mr. Otis still wants the house, Lord Canterville consents but says, ''Only you must remember that I warned you.''

The story is about Mr. Otis, a minister from the United States, who moves to England with his wife, Mrs. Otis, his son Washington, his daughter Virginia, and his twins, referred to as ''The Stars and Stripes.'' They buy the Canterville Chase, in which lives the legendary Canterville ghost.
