The Resurrection of the Dead
12 But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.
20 But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.
21 So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. 22 Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life.
Introduction
Have you ever experienced a moment where everything suddenly made sense? When I was going through the process of applying for full-time ministry in The Salvation Army, I was suddenly made redundant from my job as a solicitor. It was only when looking back at the end of the process as I was appointed to my first Salvation Army church, that I realised God had used my redundancy to push me out of my comfortable legal boat to walk on the water of full-time ministry!
The Significance of Jesus' Resurrection
In terms of our Christian faith journey, this is rather like the understanding we receive when we finally grasp the significance of Jesus' resurrection. It's like the final piece of a mystery falling into place. Without the resurrection, our Christian faith lacks coherence.
Freed from Sin, Empowered to Love
Take as an example Jesus' command to love God and others with all our being. I don't know about you, but this seems like a tall order for mere humans. It certainly is for this one! How can we possibly love our enemies and turn the other cheek? Through our own strength, it is impossible. Yet, it's through the power of Jesus' death and resurrection that we are freed from sin and empowered to live out these challenging teachings.
Living in Resurrection Hope
In the new life that Jesus' resurrection brings us, we look not to the sunset of our past failures and the despair they bring us, but to the sunrise of hope and a future secured by Christ's victory over death. It is transformative resurrection hope that enables us to live above sin and its entanglements.
Leaning into the Power of the Resurrection
Today, let's lean into the power of the resurrection. Recognise that you are not called to live this life by your own strength but by the power that raised Jesus from the dead. Embrace this power in your daily relationships, and watch how it transforms your ability to love and forgive.
Reflection Question
How can the resurrection power that lives within you change the way you approach the commands of Jesus today?
