Following his discovery of his murdered friend Hannay is forced to confront his suspicions. He resolves that going to the police will not be a good idea as they will immediately suspect him. He also suspects that Scudder's assassins are still watching so his is forced to go on the run himself until the time is right for him to tell his tory to the right authorities.
He spends his evening planning his escape and boarding a train bound for Scotland he goes 'on the run'.
