In this episode I’m catching up with my friend Ricardo, a Portuguese language and literature teacher. We talk about Portuguese identity and the myth around the concept of “saudade.” We also talk about the process of writing a Ph.D. dissertation and take some detours to chat about the death of the author, Fernando Pessoa, Herberto Helder, Amalia Rodrigues and even Chavela Vargas. Finally, we compare our respective experiences of leaving our hometowns to study abroad, as well as the benefits of judging books by their covers. You might even get to hear me sing a little flamenco…

“Sentimental Education”
While giving an immediate intensity and complexity to the simplest and most inevitable of sensations does bring about a dramatic increase in the pleasure of feeling, it can also cause an inordinate increase in the suffering that comes from feeling. This is why the dreamer’s second step should be to avoid suffering. He should not avoid it as a stoic or an epicurean might do, by unsettling himself as a way of hardening himself against pleasure might be [...]

Another subtler and more difficult method is to accustom oneself to projecting one’s pain onto some imaginary figure, to create another ‘I’ who takes on the burden of our suffering, who suffers what we suffer. The next stage is to create an inner sadism so entirely masochistic that it takes pleasure in your suffering as if it were someone else’s. This method, which at first glance seems impossible, is not easy, but should not prove difficult for those who have laboured to become expert at creating the inner lie.
