  1. A beautiful little tweak to the word "Win" to have in mind during tougher moments during Practice or Competition Winning produces probably the most thrilling and desired feelings 🔥 to have in Sports. On this (not so) ‘Quick Bring it On’ Episode, I provide a little important tweak you can take with you around the word “WIN” . This one is for a deeper focus on the present moment during practice or competition (and to what the game asks from you), and a not so deep fusion with your emotionality and thinking sides that are creeping in there and becoming unhelpful. ( Essential Interview Mentioned is on EWS Episode #77 ) _____ -- Tell us your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted ;) -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you? -- We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need (see website)
  2. A Conversation with a Performance Psychologist helping Leaders on Public Speaking, and Athletes with Anxiety Joining in EWS is Dr. Nick Lazaris, 👴 with +30years of Experience working on Performance areas and helping Athletes mostly regarding the perils of Anxiety. A conversation that combines stories, examples, and applicable ideas to assist in your Sports Practice and in some tougher moments where anxiety can start to feel really big and impact negatively your performance. Tune in if you're interested on dismantling some troubles you have been getting and obstacles you don’t know how to deal with them or simply surpass and perform more ate ease, more freely, and in the words of Dr. Nick - “Fearlessly” (we unpack more on minute 14). ___ QUOTES: “I can do this! I don’t have to be afraid. Not without anxiety, The goal is to manage it. Anxiety is not our enemy.”; “Performing Fearlessly is about being in charge of yourself, in the present.” ___ TIMESTAMPS: Intro About Dr. Nick > (00:55) ; Beginning (Stories of Anxiety and Sabotage from Nick) > (07:45) ; Managing Anxiety & Expectations - His Process of Professionalization > (11:20) ; On “Performing Fearlessly” > (14:12) ; Fear & What Matters Link - Awareness and Care > (18:52) ; About some internal Battles > (21:42) ; On Perfectionism and Doubt - ‘Words That Kill’: “Getting Ready” + “Maybe” > (23:10) ; Shift on Mindset + Taking Charge > (30:23) ; Anxious on Critical Situations? 3. Some Stories and Lessons coming from an Actor, Public Speaker, and most impactfully, a Soccer Referee - on "How Not to Take Things Personally" We all get triggered by some things, in some way or another. 😤 This can be good to mobilize one's energy for the sake of a good performance, or it can block an Athlete's optimal performance. What about being able to not letting criticism get the best out from you, and picking on the useful information that is coming from the sensitive topic pointed at? As the Author of this Speech, the Referee Frederik Imbo tells: “Most of us are referees at heart; we like to call throws and errors on someone else.” Tune in on this PotW to check out how this plays out, and how you can become better able to regulate all of this, and efficiently manage when people criticize you more harshly or point at some deficits in your performance. A path to E-W-S indeed, on this extended PotW. _____ -- Frederik Imbo’s Tedtalk -- About Psychotherapy ___ -- Tell us your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted ;) -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you?
  4. Hoping that you (Athlete) shake it off some rules you have around depending on certain feelings to perform "well". Well enough is key, here An IQ to shake some preconditions and expectations 🤕 Athletes usually have in regards to their own levels of performance on training sessions or competition matches. This will inspire a reflection for yourself about your feelings and the way you look at them. Plus, on how they are influencing what you’re bringing (or being able to bring) to the pitch - to your performance. I hope in the end, you will not need (depend) that much of feeling X or Y to perform well (the most adapted possible - with effort) 😉 PS.: I heard this message before from Ken, but here is a link with the excerpt from an interview he gave and pronounced the quote, exploring it. ___ -- On Implementation Intentions -- We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need (see website) -- Explore EWS Fully -- Tell us your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted 😉 -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you?
  5. Alittle tricky play on the popular game of "Would you Rather" and drawing on some implications applied to Sports A QBIO to entertain your brain for reflection (😬 vs 😳). How does the prospect of regret may influence your sporting practice (on training ground and during competitions)? How so, being embarrassed for some mistake, may contain a gem to be picked for learning? Examples are provided, and with this one, I would really love if you wrapped your mind around this and delve in it a bit more. 6. Some Essential Notes and Data from Fresh Science Research around Sleep Regarding to Elite Athletes + Notes for and from General Population This one is to highlight 💤 the essential roles of Sleep towards serving Performance levels. I’ve studied for a month from 2 world-known experts on this field, and I lay out here some theoretical considerations about Sleep + I talk about the evidence out there in relation with Athletes and Sleep, coming from two super Fresh Reviews of Science Literature, from 2019 and 2021 (links below). 7. Several wise accounts about approaches in Peak Performance & Dealing with difficult times in Sports A talk about 🚧 “overcoming obstacles to excellence” - and more! This is just to honor our guest’s motto in the work he does as a Clinical and Sport Psychologist in the USA - Dr. Eddie O’Connor. This one filled me of joy, and I consider this one of the most useful and essential for any athlete! Hands-on approaches are shared for athletes to relate better with themselves in tougher times, as well as managing unhelpful feelings and reactions related with performance. Our conversation ranged on topics like Failure (one’s perceptions and reactions around that), the traits and menaces about Positive Thinking, around his motto “Overcoming Obstacles to Excellence”, and still about Doing one’s best in the present moment, plus other stories related to psychological experiences during sporting events. _____ QUOTES: “There’s always something naturally human that keeps getting in the way. We’re all motivated (...) Motivation for what?” “Ashamed of the quote on old BC: “Because Average isn’t good enough” “If Excellence in your mind is achieving a gold medal, that’s a terrible message. You got (many other achievements). Excellence is a Personal Standard” “(...) It’s a poisonous way that we do as humans, and it’s catastrophic to performers. Because they have nothing to do with us. 8. On Mental Poise, and the process Russel uses to perform under pressure and dealing with life's difficulties On prioritizing Mental Training 🧠 (and Mental Health). A set of reports from an elite NFL player - Russel Wilson, retrieving from a TedTalk he gave. A great 6min informal speech naturalizing life hardships in sports contexts, and sharing a few stories from himself, and how he went about them coping the most efficiently possible. 9. Dissecting a bit the motivational cliché of "believing in yourself" and that you can improve. A critical element 🚣‍♂️ for any process of learning or improvement: BELIEF. To believe that oneself is capable of improving is often considered as the pivotal aspect that must accompany a person so that that improvement occurs. We all also know that this is too broad of a matter, and that it often sounds as a motivational cliché. Like: “believe in yourself! You are capable of anything” type of statements. Either way, from this episode, I want to show a power within ‘believing on improvement’ (two key words!). Alongside that, I wanted to draw on some behavioral implications this aspect has on one’s efforts and training. As a quote from Terry Orlick says: “As your beliefs about limits change, the limits change”. How’s been yours? PS: Cristiano Ronaldo just broke another record: all-time best scorer for National teams - 111goals. And many people (including himself often mentioning) attribute this astronomical success to believing one can do it and cultivating a desire to improve and get closer to those big goals. _____ -- We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need (see website) -- Explore EWS Fully -- Tell us your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted ;) -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you?
  10. Condensed Topics Retrieved from SM Profiles of this Reference in Sport Psych A Special Episode for EWS! 🦸‍♂️ It is with one of our most seeked Sport Psychologists, Dan Abrahams, and it is in a new format - I prepared some topics in a PowerPoint presentation, where me and Dan went along live talking about them. It was one of the hardest Interviews to prepare so far, since I knew Dan could cover many topics with expertise and eloquence. That’s why I decided to change the style a bit and found it to be one of EWS’ most complete conversations. We've covered a range of themes on: - Identity of the Player/Athlete (Balance, Mental Health, and Management of other issues) ; Guided Discovery (to help on Learning Processes + CLA Theory) ; Alertness (on Focus and important in-field aspects) ; Stretch-Support Balance Principle ; Self-Efficacy (A 4 Component Model and how Coaches can stimulate this on Athletes) ; Mental Toughness (Tweaks on the concept and elements to inspire a Mental Skillset) ; Achievement Goal Theory (one’s ego, and mastering processes). Quotes: - “In training, from a Cognitive perspective, we need simple tasks and tougher tasks. We need to introduce ‘desirable difficulties’ (such as variability, spacing) (...) we have a greater chance to learn what we’re trying to learn - to improve.” - “Great coaches coach explicitly and implicitly ... 19. About a key Characteristic that distinguishes good players, from stellar players... Technical abilities 🏌️‍♂️ are not enough to be a great player. Adding to that Physical and Tactical excellence and it’s still not enough to be stellar! So what does it take to achieve expertise and become a player that stands out from the rest of the competition? Hint: an ability to see into the future... How is it, exactly?? Wishy washy stuff? 20. On Efficiently Working one's Parenting Approaches, from a "Non-perfect Dad" A big one for Parents, finally! 👨‍👦 “Non-Perfect Dad” Richard Shorter joins EWS to talk with Host Gonçalo Marques about Parenting Approaches to youngsters in sports. Keep in mind that this go crosswise and there's Educational gems packed here. We go through what may be healthier, and more enriching for a proper athlete and child development, and through what can be more inappropriate, or maladaptive in that sense. Always in mind that our main purpose is to promote reflection into one’s Practices and views for their families and children (and for the Child as an Athlete in talent development processes!). Not imposing our views. Although Parents want the best for their Children, sometimes the best intentions are not accompanied by the best practices. And unfortunately, there's a set common displaced behaviors from Parents to their Children in Sports. Anyways, we unravel topics like (among others) : - The risks of overvaluing Winning, and of overemphasizing good scores, as it can bring conditionalisms + disregard important aspects in childs behaviors and mindset; - The benefits of creating a "Safe Harbor" (and touching on concept of "Safe Uncertainty") - Expectations and Demands from Parents - Athlete's Value vs Person's Value + values Enjoy! Tell us your thoughts or stories in the last link in this ‘Description’, or by commenting anywhere. And pin this Episode as an essential one for E-W-S... at home! -- Non-Perfect Dad Website -- _____ Quotations: “Lots of fun away from what my kids are good at (...) I love my Children, AND they play Sports. I don't love my 'Sporty Children'." "If a coach understands the best outcome is a gold medal, then those habits (for parents) will be different to others more developmental orientated. And that's part of the challenge of the society we live..." "They (...) play against teams that are 2-3years older (...) 21. On Minimizing the Risks of Excessive Preparation. Get Unstuck from Internal Constraints and Perfectionism Having imprecise shots 🎯 in your practice (whatever they may be)? Great!! How so “great”, are you kidding??! No, these fails and imprecisions are good for development. They can be your little coaches voicing to you what you need to adjust the next time. So, we didn’t incur on a mistake on writing the title for this QBIO. This one is to make you remind that the off-target attempts in your practices (i.e. shots, passes, technical executions...) CAN BE effective teachings! Teachings to make you grow and actualize your methods and techniques. And all this might only be well achieved and secured by having a clean mind and free from distractions and negative intrusive thoughts. And these elements + other wishes for you to Efficiently Work your Sports Practice, are encompassed by other contents EWS keeps publishing. So keep attuned to new episodes coming and the broad list already published! --> And while you keep in touch with us, please think about it: Besides the tweaks you can make in your trainings to have them become more “Deliberate Practices” How can you find ways to Practice more efficiently? In other words, how can you fire more often. And what will you learn from each shot? PS. We leave a catchy little quote inside (from Ice Hockey player Wayne Gretzky - expect an IQ soon on another one from him) for you to keep it on the back of your mind when you’re feeling you are about to retract your attempts or your moves 😉 Just click play. _____ -- We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need. -- Learn More -- Tell us your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted 😉 -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you?
  22. Ever wondered that many obstacles you have in front of you are literally helping your physical and mental development? Check that out! It’s common sense that Obstacles 🕸️ block, or impair, one’s level of performance. But what if some obstacles can propel better learning + great developments in your performance? This can certainly be true, and there’s Science to back it up, as well as real case reports in favor of that. This is based on the CLA (Constraints Led Approach) and we learned about it from THIS GUY & from *THIS PODCAST* (reference of this PotW!) See, the main logic: by inserting some tweaks on a certain task a player has to perform (i.e. a drill in his sport modality practice), or on any exercise a student on a Physical Education Class, the player/student will start to be more stimulated, more encourage to find new solutions, which in turn, will make him/her develop new resources and skills! But please, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Go on listen to this Pod and visit ‘ The Perception Action Podcast ’ to dive deeper on this topic (*good for Coaches*). What about this to E-W-S, huh? Please share with us: what are some obstacles/constraints that you once thought to be harmful for your practice or development, and that you now know it made a positive impact? --- Scientific Articles with Overview about CLA (.2.)--- The 5 Part Series On Constraints-Led from Rob Gray _____ -- We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need. -- Learn More -- Tell us HERE your thoughts / questions by audio - quick and anonymously if wanted 😉 -- We give you tips, can we get some TIPS from you?
  23. You Optimize your Performances by Doing Your Best, Right? Speaking about the Appropriate 'Best' for E-W-S Giving your best 🚅 is super appreciated by Teammates, Coaches, and Society in general. But does this really mean? And what does one's best involve? Is it static? Is it malleable? On this co-produced IQ episode, we dive in the intricacies of what it means to give our best in the activities we partake. In sports or otherwise. We pay attention to some issues connected with this big topic (that can touch on so many important elements to take in consideration!). I know there's much more to talk about what was mentioned here, and for that we recommend you to keep listening to EWS content, to visit our website ewsport.eu for exclusive content; and more importantly, to engage with us! 24. Bringing Mindfulness Trainings and day-to-day Principles for E-W-S EWS Expert talk, w/ Dr. Tim Pineau ☯️ - Researcher and Clinical Psychotherapist; co-creator of the Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement program (MSPE); Author, and Sports Consultant. We went over things like how Mindfulness principles can be applied to student-athletes lives; talked about ways on how to be at ease, and even grow professionally and personally, from difficult emotions; talked about appropriate times to be in auto-pilot mode, and, on the flip side, some hindrances that it can bring; the type of self-criticism that functions as an impairing element to performance; and touched on another topics and curious facts. All in all, this is a colleague of mine that I love by his stance of having integrative views and treating the athlete or coach as a person in his/her whole with needs and wishes that go beyond the sports realm, and that is clearly manifested in his work, also continuously integrating Mindfulness in all the team elements that he gets in touch with. Tim also has a Podcast in collaboration with lead Researcher on the field, Keith Kauffman, called Mindful Sport Performance Podcast. You can see more about their WORK and PROGRAM by clicking the words. ____ Quotes: “Athletes who get caught in that trap are just more likely to make that mistake; what they are doing is that they are priming themselves (by punishment) to go down an anxiety hole.” “You can be the strongest, the fastest, the one with most endurance (...) but if your mind is not capable of letting your body do that, you’re never gonna perform to your full potential (on being mentally sound).” ____ Timestamps: Resume and Guest Intro > (02:00) ; Tim’s Journey through the Clinical & Sport Psych > (07:40) ; On Kabat-Zinn + Mindfulness & Sport Connection > (09:55) ; MSPE Program (Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement) > (13:15) ; MSPE Principles in Student-Athletes’ lives > (15:40) ; Reflexive Reactions and Auto-pilot Mode Hindrances > (19:35) ; Being at ease with difficult emotions > (25:35) ; Hardwork on the Mental Side of Sports > (30:15) ; Mindfulness Correlates with Flow Experiences > (37:35) ; Example of an unusual sport - A Lesson on Relaxation and Moderation > (40:35) ; Self-criticism as an impairing element > (42:55) ; Ranges of quality - Poker example > (45:30) ; (!) 25. Distilling the Power of Questions over Statements or Orders Assuming something upfront from Behavior X is rash. ⁉️ Inquiring and Exploring is wise. Want to know more about your internal processes? As a coach / parent, want to get closer to your athlete / child and ‘efficiently work’ to help him? The best road I know to get there is the one with QUESTIONS. On this QBIO, not only is shared the power of questions, but more importantly, the intent and the stance one should enter while posing them (Hint: always curiosity...!) It might seem trivial, but this episode is essential to E-W-S! Questions may very well be the main ingredients for a healthy relationship, for spurring athletic development, for respect and empathy. So, do you have something to ask yourself? Someone in the team? Us, at EWS? Be at ease, and express yourself. _____ We appreciate your feedback: By leaving a Review for EWS HERE, you are automatically helping athletes/youngsters in need. Learn More
